SARCÓFAGO (definición):
Cubierta de hormigón y acero construida para contener la radiación del reactor nº 4 de la planta nuclear de Chernóbil y protegerlo de las
inclemencias meteorológicas. Todas las estructuras similares ideadas para proteger un reactor nuclear durante su fase de latencia. Ejemplos: el cajón hexagonal que actualmente y hasta 2028 sella el viejo reactor de Vandellòs 1 en Tarragona, y la cubierta del reactor 3 de Fukushima Daiichi en Japón, dañado por el gran terremoto y posterior tsunami de 2011.

SARCOPHAGUS (definition):
Shielded cover made of concrete and steel built to contain the radiation from Chernobyl nuclear plant’s number 4 reactor as well as to protect it from extreme weather conditions. All similar structures designed to protect a nuclear reactor during its decommissioning process. Examples: the hexagonal box-like structure that nowadays and untill 2028 seals old reactor 1 in Vandellòs nuclear power plant (Tarragona, Spain), and reactor 3’s cover in Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Japan, damaged in 2011 by the earthquake and the resulting tsunami.

INTRO_
El proyecto “SARCOPHAGUS” está concebido como un ensayo especulativo sobre la transición energética hacia un modelo más limpio y sostenible a partir de las marcas en el paisaje y la memoria nuclear de primera y segunda generación. Para ello, Jorge Conde centra su atención en Vandellòs (Tarragona) y otras centrales nucleares en proceso de cierre, descontaminación, desmantelamiento y recuperación del paisaje.
“SARCOPHAGUS” se inserta en el seno de las contradicciones que afectan a la agenda política actual en relación con la necesaria transición energética, es decir, las tensiones generadas por la coexistencia de diferentes corrientes económicas, científicas y de pensamiento que establecen que la nuclear es una energía verde, estable, libre de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y esencial para el funcionamiento de nuestro actual modelo de desarrollo basado en el hiperconsumo (Comisión Europea, 2022), y aquellas otras que
preconizan el cierre ordenado y total del parque nuclear –establecido para el período 2027-2035-, por considerarla una fuente de energía de alto riesgo ambiental debido a su huella contaminante y la compleja gestión de los residuos radioactivos (Plan nacional integrado de energía y clima y Agenda 2030).
En este contexto, todo indica que la energía nuclear de fisión es una industria sin futuro. ¿Tiene memoria?

The “SARCOPHAGUS” project is conceived as a speculative examination of the energy transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable model based on markings on the landscape and the memory of first and second generation nuclear power. With this aim, Jorge Conde focuses his attention on Vandellòs (Tarragona, Spain) and other nuclear power plants in the process of being closed, decontaminated and dismantled, and the recovery of the landscape.
“SARCOPHAGUS” delves into the contradictions that affect the current political agenda in relation to the necessary energy transition, in other words, the tensions generated by the coexistence of different economic and scientific schools of thought and opinions that establish that nuclear power is a green and stable energy that is free of greenhouse gas emissions and essential for the functioning of our model of development based on hyper-consumption (European Commission, 2022), and the existence of others that advocate the ordered and total closure of the nuclear network –established for the period 2027-35- considering it to be
a high-risk energy source given its contaminating footprint and the complex management of radioactive waste (Spanish Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan and Agenda 2030).
In this context, everything seems to point to fission nuclear power being a industry without a future. But does it have a memory?
